The Next New Thing

New types of media are always on the being thought up. If i could create a new media it would be a mixture of Itunes Facebook and Youtube. So it would be a type of social media where people record themselves singing and they upload it to the site where random people can like or comment on it. But only the audio is being uploaded, and everybody is anonymous. This can help people get feedback on their vocals and also get more feedback. The positive of only the audio being uploaded is so that people judge the singing not the looks.

Our Class Wiki - So Far

I haven't started contributing to my wiki yet i but i started my research. I will be contributing to sports. I will be talking about all the sports that impact our american society and how the media affects it. Basketball, Football, Baseball and hockey. New media techniques have caused the sports that we love to change.

P2P File Sharing

File sharing is when information is transferred from one computer to another using the internet. there is another type of file sharing called p2p file sharing. P2P is also known as peer to peer and that is another type of file sharing. It is the sharing of media from peer to peer.
BitTorrent is a type of P2P file sharing. "BitTorrent lets users quickly upload and download enormous amounts of data, files that are hundreds or thousands of times bigger than a single MP3". (
The BitTorrent Effect by Clive Thompson, Wired, January 2005) This is an online site that lets download files and it is P2P as well. It is over the internet and accessible to all users.

Privacy & Confidentiality

With the arrival of new media, our privacy has been deteriorated. Once we post something on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter it is in the system forever. The world wide web is literally world wide. Somebody could save a picture you posted, so even when you delete it, it is still in the system.
We use Facebook to make friends and network, and people can save every single post we make. People blog every single event of their lives and they think since they keep their profile private outsiders won't be able to see what they're saying and what they wearing. Once something is up, its up forever.
Our confidentiality and privacy is decided by what we post. If we don't choose to use new media outlets, we are safe from this

Advice to Baruch College

Communication between students is difficult, so new media can help bring students together. Baruch can create an app, just for Baruch students, and keep it particular for each class. So whenever you enter a new class, everybody in that class is in a separate group, including the professor. There is a means of communication between classmates and the professor. This makes it easier for group projects, communication between the professor and students, adjustment to the class and making study groups.
This is how new media can make it easier for students to adjust. Students are always having a hard time making friends, this app that is strictly for Baruch students can help in the friend making process as well. It can act as a Facebook type app, where students can vent and other students can comment and relate.

Creativity and New Media

Snapchat has transformed the messaging game by sending pictures instantly. The really cool thing about this is that you can draw on each picture, and this fosters a ton of creativity. My friends and i try to draw things that are current and there is a back and forth on who has the better picture. There are tons of colors and filters that you can use to help you with your masterpiece.

Creativity

New Media is always fostering creativity. This creativity is being used in the music world by regular people who create "mashups". A mashup is a combination of two songs, the vocal of one song and the beat from another.
In 2003, A man by the name of Jeremy Brown created a mashup of a Jay-Z song and a Beck song. These two songs are nothing alike, not even the same genre but New media has allowed us to create this new type of music. This mashup was so creative and catchy that it was commercially available for download on itunes.
Jay-Z made an official  mashup using new media with Linkin Park. This was a collaborative album, a mixture of rock and rap. Each artist used their own old individual tracks and out them together.
As you can see, New Media is always fostering creativity.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

What is a virtual world? By definition its a is a computer-based online community environment that is designed and shared by individuals so that they can interact in a custom-built, simulated world. They interact with other people by using avatars, which is a three dimensional character. This sounds pretty amazing, and it can be used in a multiple ways.
One way it is being used is in the hospital. There is a given situation such as a black out and the nurses have to perform all the necessary actions to get all the patients what they need. This is a scenario that can happen and when it does the virtual simulated drill will have the nurses prepared for when it does occur. This virtual world can also be used to train medical and nursing students in clinical skills. This makes them prepared for when they have to perform on an actual human being. The cost of each different mannequin is quite expensive, but you cant put a price on an actual human being.
Another way it is being used is by making people spend less money on things they don't need. People are using virtual worlds to create their avatars and buy clothes for them instead of themselves. Crazy right? But statistics have shown, that people who are buying all these clothes for their avatars are spending less money on materialistic goods. This is a means of saving money. People are having a real pleasure when they see their avatar wearing the finest of clothing and jewelry.
The pros of having a virtual world are that it can help you be prepared in certain situations. The cons are that it can consume people and have them live in a screen, which is quite unhealthy.
Virtual worlds can foster creativity like in the example above. They allow people to spend money and customize themselves like they never could. This gives a euphoric feeling. Also it can create new fashion trends.
I believe soon that we will sit in out living rooms all day and be zombies while we do everything in a "virtual world". We would live out our fantasies and not care about how we actually look, but only care about how we look in the "world".

Blog About Twitter

Twitter is a new means of communicating. Many people have lengthy discussions and debates on twitter. A discussion on twitter differs from a blackboard discussion. Twitter is much more free and quicker unlike a blackboard discussion. You need to look at individual's post and then comment on it, and then leave their post to see other people's posts. On Twitter you just freely scroll down and if something interests you and you want to discuss it, you can quickly reply to it and voice your opinion. If someone responds to you, all they have to do is voice their opinion and tag your name.
Twitter is different from an in class discussion as well. For any topic of discussion sources are needed and you can't bring those up in a classroom. So when somebody says something, you can never know if what they are saying is valid or not. If you're having a discussion on Twitter and you come across something that you think isn't right, you can search it up and reply with that link. Twitter is taking over how we discuss things and is doing a good job.

Social Networking Sites

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and snapchat are all different types of social media sites that millions of people use everyday. Facebook is used mostly for connecting people and creating events. Its a good site to bring people together, especially people who live far away. It has an advanced messenger, where speed is key, whether you're sending a message, picture or video.
Twitter is used mostly for news updates. It is so vast, that you can find out what happened on last night's democratic debate, who won the mets game, a new selfie that Kylie Jenner posted or about the potential hurricane that is about to strike Florida. Twitter is constantly being updated, you don't even need to watch television.
Instagram is about posting pictures, any types of pictures. They are posted on the newsfeed and your followers can like it and comment it. They have updated their app recently by being able to send people DM's (direct messages) so you can have a private conversation with somebody.
Snapchat is a replacement for your phone's messaging system. It can send pictures and videos but is only limited for an allotted time.

Social Networking

Social networking is a a means of communication and branching out. Corporate individuals and regular individuals use social networking everyday, whether its to make change the time of a meeting or whether its to wish somebody happy birthday. There are tons of social network websites, Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin Twitter etc. and they can be used in many ways. For example, Facebook can be used by companies to create their own page that has information about the business, such as locations, contacts, what the company does and pictures. Linkedin is more of a professional means and can help connect people in the business world.

Social networking is very beneficial to society. It helps people stay connected with others without the use of a rolodex. It also helps recruiters help hire people more easily. ""I ended up looking for consumer product marketing," Crawford-Hentz says. "And I hit upon his profile, and I sent him this e-mail saying: 'Hi, Alfred, I found your profile on line. And we have a position that I think may be of interest to you.'"" (Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting) This is one way recruiters can look for people to hire, it is an instant access of people's resumes, ideas, and products. This can shorten the hiring process, and can make it easier for people looking for work as well, all they have to do is put themselves out on the web.

For every good thing there is a bad, and the same goes for social media. Social networking can lead to gossiping and spreading rumors about individuals, and this has lead to suicide of many teens. Many teens group up and can single people out, this can make individuals feel inferior, and instead of turning off the computer screen, they stay on because social media is their life, they have lost personal contact with people because cyber interaction is the new thing. Also, social media creates meaningless friends. People have friends on social media that they could have met only one time in their life, but since adding a friend is as easy as clicking a button and hitting "send request", it makes it that much easier for people to add them.

Social media is growing everyday, from existing media sites expanding to other countries to new sites being created. It was only not too long ago where people where calling other people to talk to them, nowadays we can send them an instant message with equals the amount of time of the person to just dial the other person's phone number. Soon we will be living in a world where social media will be the only way to communicate, where we will be glued to our screens every moment of the day. A lot of this will be for the positives but there will be negatives as these technologies evolve.

Ebay: community or bazaar?

My research topic is on Ebay. I will be discussing multiple perspectives of it, as well as the positives and negatives that Ebay brings to the people. There is no doubt that Ebay is an example of new media because it brings community, communication and collaboration. The debate of my topic is whether Ebay is a community or a bazaar, i will break this down. I will also let people know whether this vast system makes it harder or easier for individuals on multiple levels. Ebay has affected the online market and has brought a vast amount of items to the reach of the people. This is the area that interests me.
